Rose Chong and one of her Mannequins
This portrait, a finalist in the 2023 Portia Geach Memorial Award features legendary costumier and Fitzroy icon Rose Chong, shown alongside one of her faithful vintage mannequins, both bearing the marks of a life well lived.
A nod to the 1594 painting Gabrielle d'Estrées and one of her sisters (artist unknown, School of Fontainebleau), this reinterpretation sees Rose modestly adorned with a pair of lime green fake boobs, created by @ms_edgeley.
Portrait of Caroline Bowditch
Caroline Bowditch is a multifaceted artist; performer, creator, educator and advocate who describes herself as a persistent "mosquito" buzzing in the ear of the arts industry, challenging and reshaping perceptions of disability.
This portrait of Caroline was a finalist in the 2024 Portia Geach Memorial Award.
Anna Go-Go as the Allegory of Inclination
Described by The Guardian as a “Melbourne rock’n’roll institution” Anna Go-Go is the founder of Anna’s Go-Go Academy, comedian, host, choreographer, mass dance maestra, and author of Cat Lady Manifesto.
In this portrait, Anna is reimagined as the Allegory of Inclination, inspired by Artemisia Gentileschi’s 17th-century painting in which a female figure personifies creative instinct. In my version, the compass, a symbol of scientific reason, is replaced with a cat bowl.
